Houma's Parades, Krewes & Mardi Gras Calendar
Benevolent and public-minded krewe organizations are the heart and soul of most public Mardi Gras celebrations, and Houma is no exception. Boasting more than a dozen parades each year, Houma is the second largest Mardi Gras celebration Louisiana. During the days leading up to Mardi Gras, there may be multiple krewe-sponsored pardes/events every day (midday, afternoon, and evening).
Each parade is filled with colorful floats, marching bands, cars, trucks, service organizations, costumed performers, and krewe members throwing literarlly tens of thousands of beads, coins, balls, novelties, and other throws.
In Houma, many locals gather throws during Mardi Gras and then gift them to their favorite charities who in turn sell them back to local krewes for use in the next year’s Mardi Gras. In this way, money is earned for local charities, and beads get recycled, reducing the need to manufacture more beads.
Crowds gather all along Houma's multiple parade routes to witness the spectacle and catch as many throws as possible. But if you are willing to pay a nominal entrance fee, the balcony at Mahoney’s Bar is centrally located and an excellent vantage point to watch the parades along the Westside Route.
